Haydale Supplies Neoenpla with Functionalized Graphene for Food Packaging
Haydale Supplies Neoenpla with Functionalized Graphene for Food Packaging
South Korean plastics developer Neoenpla is being supplied with functionalized graphene nano-platelets (GNPs) by U.K based materials company Haydale. Neoenpla has already put these supplies to work, using them to fabricate an initial sample of food storage zipper bags and biodegradable bags as well. These GNPs have been functionalized using Haydale's patented HDPlas® technology and are considered to be a GNP enhanced thermoplastic. Other materials such as LLDPE (linear low-density polyethylene) are commonly used in food packaging because of their high resistance to moisture, tearing, and chemicals. However, these new GNP enhanced food storage bags have been shown to have an increased tensile strength of 31% compared to LLDPE. Moreover, this increase in mechanical strength allows for a decrease in film thickness from 90µm to 60µm per bag. Additionally, the Graphene enhanced food storage bags have integrated antibacterial, UV, and barrier properties that help keep foods fresher for longer compared to non-graphene bags. Read more here

Packaging Alternatives to Combat Plastic Pollution
Packaging Alternatives to Combat Plastic Pollution
Plastic waste remains an important environmental concern. Unfortunately, it is estimated that only about 9 percent of plastics are successfully recycled. To make matters worse it is also speculated that somewhere around 8 tonnes of plastic enter our oceans every year. It's a relief that various packaging firms have started researching new packaging materials with some companies even experimenting with using food waste as a potential packaging substitute. Great Wrap an Australian packaging company thought of the idea to use starch from left over potatoes and synthesize it into a natural biopolymer to make cling film and palette wrap. These innovations are impressive and what's more incredible is Great Wrap's ability to secure availability of the materials that they use. Apparently, they secured their materials through the potato processed foods industry which they suggest has steady growth and should be able to provide more than enough materials for their needs.
