PepsiCo Announces Plan to Reduce Virgin Plastic Use
PepsiCo Announces Plan to Reduce Virgin Plastic Use
PepsiCo has recently announced new plans to reduce virgin plastic use, with consumer trials in European markets beginning later this year. The company is planning to fully eliminate fossil-fuel based plastic use in all their chip bags by 2030. Instead, packaging will be made from “renewable plastics” that are made from organic byproducts of materials like cooking oil and paper pulp. Soda bottles are planned to be made of 100% recycled polyethylene terephthalate (rPET) with some products already using the material. In their report, PepsiCo states that while packaging is a necessary component of their business, they are committed to reducing the amount of packaging waste their products generate. In the past 4 years, PepsiCo has invested over $100 million in recycling.

Swiss Scientists Develop New PET-Like Plastic Made from Plant Waste
Scientists at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology have developed a new plastic that can be made from non-edible plant matter. The material is reportedly heat-resistant and tough while also being capable of creating a barrier for gases (an important quality that makes the material a good candidate for use in food packaging. Due to the material’s simple manufacturing process, it can also be chemically recycled and degrade entirely into sugars. While the scientists have noted that the new material is an excellent candidate for food packaging, they are exploring its potential use in textiles, medicine, and electronics. Jeremy Luterbacher, a professor at the EPFL’s School of Basic Sciences explains that much of the material’s strengths lie in the intact sugar structures contained within it. Read more here.
