Riverside Natural Foods Commits to Extensive Plastic Waste Reduction Strategy
Riverside Natural Foods Commits to Extensive Plastic Waste Reduction Strategy
Riverside Natural Foods, the firm behind brand snacks Cookie Pal, MadeGood, and Good To Go is committed to eliminating plastic waste and has already delivered quantifiable results through their three pronged waste reduction strategy and waste collection efforts. Riverside Natural Foods partnered with global action platform Repurpose global to assist with their plastic clean up efforts. Throughout the partnership Riverside has helped collect more than 2 million pounds of plastic waste, an amount comparable to more than 50 million plastic bottles and 180 million plastic bags. Additionally, through this initiative they have helped support more than 300 employees with increased incomes and social security and they also helped in providing more than 40,000 homes with formal waste management capabilities. Riverside also looked to sort out their in-house sustainability strategy by applying a three pronged strategy consisting of sourcing bioplastics, switching all applicable packaging to paper, and actively supporting R&D efforts in circular packaging solutions. There are still some challenges to overcome in riverside's sustainability efforts. Learn more here.

RFID Technology Will Change the Medical Packaging Industry
RFID Technology Will Change the Medical Packaging Industry
Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology will revolutionize medical packaging. The ability to trace goods as well as collect data automatically make RFID medical packaging one of the most innovative technologies of the past 25 years. MIT ranked it as the 10th most innovative technological advancement in the last couple of decades in their "Scoping Review of Technology" published in 2022. Packaging integrated with RFID is able to use radio waves to transmit and receive data, a useful feature that can reduce errors in hospital operating rooms, and can help against black market drug counterfeiting. There are two types of RFID ranges including high frequency(HF) and ultra high frequency(UHF) bands. High frequency is meant for short range and ultra high frequency is meant for longer range applications. RFID is also versatile in regards to its compatibility with devices, as several common electronic devices such as smartphones, computers, and other devices are able to read and store data from RFID data. Antimicrobial Packaging has Great Potential in the Food and Beverage Sector
Antimicrobial Packaging has Great Potential in the Food and Beverage Sector
Antimicrobial packaging can drive sustainability in the food and beverage industry by extending product shelf life and by making packaging containers reusable. A large portion of household packaging waste comes from single use food and beverage containers. Some packaging producers have implemented solutions such as reusable and refillable containers. However, there is concern among consumers about potential left over or unseen bacteria on reusable containers. Their concerns are justified considering that leftover residue on the packaging can lead to the forming of bacteria, mildews, and molds. Moreover, substantial microbial growth can lead to damages to plastic packaging containers such as unwanted odors, premature degradation, and discoloration. All of this unfortunately fuels today’s throw away culture since it is easy and affordable to simply throw away disposable containers than it is to maintain higher quality reusable containers. To address these various issues, antimicrobial properties can be integrated into plastic packaging to fight off bacterial growth and extend product shelf life. Antimicrobial technology is present and active on the packaging from the very start until the end of its useful lifetime. The technology also gives consumers the option of reusing or repurposing the plastic packaging containers. Antimicrobial chemistries can be easily incorporated into various types of plastics and there should be no compatibility issues with common processing machinery or equipment. Learn more here.
