Amazon Looks to Minimize Packaging Waste
Amazon Looks to Minimize Packaging Waste
Amazon is committed to eliminating packaging waste and reducing the carbon footprint of the packaging materials they utilize to ship orders. Their ideal goal would be to ship orders in packaging that is protective of the contents inside the package and that is the right size while also being recyclable. Those goals certainly seem hard to obtain considering the diversity of the products they ship and the volume of the orders they fulfill. Nonetheless, they assure their customers that they have a team of scientists and experts that are working diligently to reinvent the way they package orders. Amazon is especially concerned with flexible plastic packaging waste, and they are taking multiple approaches to solve this issue. Their solution to this problem involves eliminating plastics where possible and in instances where they cannot, they look to replace the plastic with an alternative material which is more readily recyclable. Red Seaweed Could be a Green Substitute for Plastic
Red Seaweed Could be a Green Substitute for Plastic
Red seaweed could prove to be a sustainable and biodegradable alternative to plastic. Researchers at the Marine Biotechnology Division of the National Institute of Ocean Technology (NIOT), Chennai, recently developed a biopolymer that is made almost entirely out of marine algae. And while replacing polymers completely with this type of material is currently unfeasible, researchers say that this material is currently able to substitute plastic in certain applications. Areas where this seaweed- based material could be used include bioplastic films for packaging, biomedical scaffolds/grafts, 3D printing ink, controlled drug delivery, biosensor, and microbial fuel cell for electric vehicles. Read more about this ingenious material here.
