Multinational Firms Could Popularize Reusable Packaging
Multinational Firms Could Popularize Reusable Packaging
Reusable packaging may gain popularity as multinational firms SC Johnson and Reckitt Benckiser launch reusable and refillable packaging product lines in the household cleaning supplies category. SC Johnson's offering, appropriately named the "dissolve system" features .28oz dissolvable pods that are added to a reusable and recyclable PET spray bottle. The cleaning formulations that are available for the dissolve system are Windex, Scrubbing Bubbles, and Fantastik, all of which were chosen for their "iconic" image. Reckitt Benckiser chose their Lysol cleaning product for the introduction of their refillable packaging option. Surveys conducted by SC Johnson found that 91% of consumers had a positive sentiment towards the refill product options. However, executives at the firm mentioned that less than half of their consumers knew about their reusable options. Nevertheless, execs at SC Johnson are confident that once they overcome the product awareness hurdle their products will become widely popular. One can only imagine what this would mean for the product packaging industry as a whole. Learn more here.

Coke Deploys Simplistic Award Winning Bottle Design in EU
Coke Deploys Simplistic Award Winning Bottle Design in EU
Coca-Cola EU are getting creative with their environmental strategies as they deploy a new award winning tethered closure format solution for their soft drinks in PET bottles. This strange yet fairly simplistic bottle design was created in an attempt to make the bottle closures (caps) more likely to be recycled and less likely to be littered. This is likely a response to the EU's single-use plastics directive which looks to decrease waste from single-use plastics through various regulations. The tethered closure design was developed by packaging manufacturer Berry Global Group, Inc. who won the prestigious Technology Excellence Award in the sustainability category at PACK EXPO International. 400 million tethered caps have been successfully deployed thus far in Germany, Spain, and the UK.
