AmBev to Implement 100% Plant-Based Drink Bottles from Avantium
Renewable technology chemistry company, Avantium has announced that the largest beer company in the world, AmBev, has agreed to purchase the company’s revolutionary PEF (polyethylene furanoate) to use as soft drink bottles. PEF is 100% plant-based and recyclable, and is useful as food packaging. Not only does offer significant sustainability benefits, but its oxygen barrier is ten times better than PET and its CO2 barrier is sixteen times better than currently used bottles. This announcement is a significant step in AmBev’s sustainability goal of eliminating plastic pollution from the company’s products. Karina Turci, AmBev’s sustainability manager, has mentioned that after a year of assessing PEF, the company is impressed by the performance and sustainability characteristics of the material.
