Toxic Chemicals Will No Longer be Used In Food Packaging
The FDA recently announced that per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) will no longer be used in food packaging. These toxic chemicals were commonly found in a range of food products; most notably they were used in greasy-food packaging such as pizza boxes, popcorn bags, burger wrappers, and even in pet food bags. PFAS create a sort of barrier that prevents grease, water, and other substances from seeping through food packaging, which helps keep the food fresh. However, extensive research over the last decade uncovered that PFAS can leach into food and potentially cause damaging effects in the human body and the environment. Much of the research suggested that PFAS are linked to cancer, birth defects, and immune system suppression. As a result, some food manufacturers started to slowly phase them out of their products over the years, and in 2020 the FDA said it received voluntary commitments from the remaining food manufacturers to remove PFAS form their products in the following years.
