Our flexible packaging consulting associate helps packaging companies, material developers, converters, brands and technology suppliers solve difficult technical problems and move ideas from R&D to industry. His experience spans organic synthesis, flexible packaging, biopolymers, coatings, nanotechnologies, sustainable/compostable materials, smart and antimicrobial packaging, QC/testing, equipping laboratories and product commercialization. He has 15+ years spanning materials science, packaging, and product development while translating new formulations and material platforms into manufacturable products by building collaborations with universities, manufacturers, testing laboratories, and consumer brands across the EU and U.S. He has built R&D and QC laboratories from the ground up, led R&D CAPEX planning, and secured at university approximately €1M in competitive grant funding as PI/co-PI.

PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE
R&D Team Lead — Rigid Packaging (Masterbatches, Thermoforming & Extrusion) | NantBioRenewables LLC, AL | Sep 2024 – Present
• Lead R&D for compostable lids, trays and straws, including masterbatch formulation, thermoforming, extrusion, composites and cost reduction.
• Own CAPEX R&D budgeting and grant development; build and equip QC/R&D capabilities and support third-party compostability certification (BPI, TÜV, CMA).
• Translate customer and market requirements into DOE-driven experiments, materials testing and scale-up plans; collaborate with universities and brand partners.
Materials Science Consultant — Packaging Innovation | Independent Consultancy, Ireland | Jan 2023 – 2024
• Advised an early-stage packaging technology company on commercialization, accelerating the transition from R&D trials toward industrial production.
• Provided consulting on CVD nanocoatings, biopolymers, QC systems, production and automation; delivered technical webinars and training.
Research Fellow & Principal Investigator | University College Cork, Ireland | Jul 2021 – Dec 2022
• Led a €350K Enterprise Ireland project on sustainable antimicrobial packaging coatings; managed researchers, business support and external stakeholders.
• Developed and screened 40 polymer coatings / antimicrobial systems; supported market analysis, cost modeling, IP strategy, experimental design and scale-up.
• Built relationships with 20+ stakeholders including transnational brands and EU/US manufacturers.
Senior Postdoctoral Researcher — Edible & Smart Packaging | University College Cork, Ireland | Jan 2015 – Jun 2021
• Won and managed a €600K sustainable-packaging project focused on circular-economy materials and smart packaging; directed three concurrent R&D projects.
• Established plasma-coating capability, advanced edible-film / laminate extrusion, investigated barrier properties and authored 40 technical R&D reports.

• Directed R&D projects involving Mars, Nestlé, PepsiCo and other brands; developed ultra-high-barrier packaging using AlOx/SiOx nanocoatings and nanoclay composites.
• Managed international technical collaborations, selected a $3M capital investment, built QC capability and supported supplier selection, product validation, pricing and commercialization.
